Man aces hole-in-one contest, but doesn't get paid

HELENA, Mont. — Troy Peissig's surprise at acing an $18,000 hole-in-one contest at a charity tournament has been replaced by bitter disappointment now that he hasn't been paid a dime nearly two years after making the 170-yard shot. Now state authorities are intervening, and issued an arrest warrant last week against the operator of an insurance company they say failed to pay up on a policy purchased by the Missoula tournament. Peissig, a scratch golfer, said it is a case of "how a good situation can go bad quickly." The Montana commissioner of securities and insurance said Kevin Kolenda of...

Palin: ‘I’m ecstatic we beat the ‘perky one”

Sarah Palin beat Katie Couric in the ratings game Tuesday when the two women hosted competing morning shows. Palin, never one to hold punches, gloried in her dominance over “the ‘perky one.’” “[F]rankly, I’m ecstatic we beat the ‘perky one,’” Palin emailed Zap2it, along with some glowing compliments for the “Today” show staff and cast. Her problem was not with ABC, Palin made clear, just Couric, who was filling in as the host of “Good Morning America.” “I wouldn’t have gone up against ABC’s vacationing Robin Roberts, because she’s such a good egg,” said Palin. “By the way, both Robin...

Essays for Lent: The Church

The Churchby Sebastian R. FamaThere are those who contend that the Church is not a visible institution but merely the body of believers. One in Four California Families Can’t Afford Food for Their Kids

– SAN FRANCISCO — One in four California households with children reported food hardship, according to a new analysis of Gallup data released last Thursday by the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC). “It’s disturbing, but not surprising,” said Kelly Hardy, director of health policy at Children Now. The report analyzed data gathered as part of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index project’s responses to the question: “Have there been times in the past 12 months when you did not have enough money to buy food that you or your family needed?” “It sends a clear signal of economic distress, particularly for...

Saint Bono and His Endless Crusade

Don't you dare criticize the world's most perfect celebrity — or his charitable schemes.Wow. I make a living taking on corrupt unions and incompetent politicians, but I’ve never experienced the kind of vitriol like what I’ve received criticizing U2 lead singer Bono for his tireless and tiring political activism. The article in question, originally published in the Baltimore Sun, prompted representatives from Bono’s non-profit ONE campaign to pester the Sun, challenging me (unsuccessfully) on the facts. Now Maryland Senator Ben Cardin (D) is attacking me for daring to challenge St. Bono and the efficacy of ONE. Cardin accuses me of spreading...
