Real-life Futurama tube-transport will catapult you from New York to Beijing in 2 hours The Simpsons have the monorail. Futurama has the Tube Transport System. The difference is that tube-transport is a fantasy at least for now. The folks at ET3 want to make what they call "Evacuated Tube Transport" a reality. Their proposed maglev system would be capable of propelling six-person-capacity cylinders to speeds of over 4000 miles per hour, making it possible for people to travel from New York to L.A. in just 45 minutes, or from New York to Beijing in two hours. What's more, ET3...

Hotel reccy in Panama City FL
Posted by admin / Under Travel Website
Looks like I'm going to be going to Panama City FL on business and have to stay overnight. Unfortunately I won't get to go to the beach! :-( The closest hotel to where I'm going looks to be the Wingate in Lynn Haven. It seems to have good reviews on line. Is this a decent part of town for a woman alone? Inquiring minds would like to know. Thanks!

Forget Travel If You Owe The IRS
Posted by admin / Under Travel Website
If he were in charge of travel, the Soup Nazi might say, No Passport for you! In real life, travel may seem unrelated to taxes, except perhaps for those annoying airport taxes on international destinations. But a bigger tax and travel connection could keep you at homepermanently. A tax law quietly proposed a few months agoOwe IRS Taxes, Lose Your Passportis quietly gaining momentum. Now more people have noticed. If you owe the IRS? Youre not going anywhere if this law passes. In America, we love to tinker with our tax laws. Congress is always introducing one bill or another...

Americans Are Still Getting Their Kicks Along Route 66
Posted by admin / Under Travel Website
Many Americans cant remember a time before the interstate-highway system streamlined cross-country travel into more-or-less straight, convenient grooves across the United States. And those are many of the same people who might have traveled the famous, winding Route 66 from the Midwest, across the Great Plains and deserts of the Southwest, and ultimately to California. Theyre also the same generation who dreamed about the open road to the lyrics of the song, (Get Your Kicks on) Route 66, first recorded by Nat King Cole: It winds from Chicago to LA, More than two thousand miles all the way. Get your...

TSA Tell-All: 'The Terrorists Always Seem to Be One Step Ahead'
Posted by admin / Under Travel Website
The TSA is always in the news these days, and usually not for the right reasons. You might say the controversial agency has an image problem. Or is that an imaging problem? Either way, the coverage has mostly been one-sided, so we decided to speak with a former TSA security officer to find out what it's like on the other side of the screening process. The former Transportation Security Officer (TSO), who agreed to talk with us on the condition of anonymity, worked at a major U.S. airport until being injured on the job. Get the scoop on misbehaving passengers,...

Pure Michigans Bid For More Tax Money
Posted by admin / Under Travel Website
A new study on Michigans 2011 Pure Michigan advertising campaign repeats the common ploy of using "multiplier" analyses to defend some line items in the state budget. This technique is often used to justify government spending on everything from public transportation to film subsidies. Multiplier analyses take some economic activity and estimate its net economic impacts. For example, it looks at something like a customer buying a pair of shoes, and estimates what effect the retailer's use of the proceeds from the sale has as that money flows through the economy. Though they often use overblown and sometimes erroneous assumptions,...
